There was a case of an attempt to make atheism into a religion, Joseph Stalin tried to do that, basically declaring himself to be the "deity" and the people to worship him. It only shows that any concept or philosophy can be corrupted and that absolute power corrupts absolutely. We can claim that Stalin was not a "real atheist" with the same sincerity that Christians can claim that Hitler was not a "real Christian". I don't personally know what either of them believed, but if we are to pick and choose who is a "real Christian" then the polls showing the number of Christians in the USA/World are probably very skewed by people that are not "real Christians" as well.

For those of you that claim to not have evolved from a more primitive life form, all I can say is "be patient".

Another perspective

Sure, Stalin was a real atheist. And Hitler was a real vegetarian, but that's not why he was rotten.

Atheism is a position, but it's not an ideal to shoot for. That's Communism you're thinking of. Stalin pushed the Soviet Union towards THAT ideal. And not very well as many socialists and even Marxists have said.

The reason atheism goes with Communism is that Marx said it is the opium of the people. To paraphrase the full passage, the oppressed masses need it to dull their suffering. There's nothing actually wrong with it, it's only a symptom.

The point of removing religion for a revolution is to make the people FEEL their pain so that they will rise up. The point of keeping it out AFTER the revolution is to avoid religious ideals conflicting with Communist ones. Atheism is not a motivator for anything in this situation, it's just the hole left by a forced absence.
