How do we change the poor perception of atheists?

Question::
I grew up in a Christian home with Christian beliefs and values. Two years ago I looked at the region as a whole and with the help of a crazy Christian private school I became an Atheist. I don’t judge Christians as crazy people that believe in fairy tails, but instead (at lest the true Christians) as people that are faithful, loyal, and are always willing to help anyone that needs it. When I converted two years ago and people asked me about what I believe in I do not hesitate to tell them that I am an Atheist. I have gotten many responses form religious people, I was told that I was going to hell, that I’m a baby killer (I guess that their talking about abortions), how can a rational person like you not believe in god, and even a Nazi. (If you want I can make a pretty large list) My question is why do religious people view us this way and how can I help change their view that we are none of the things above? - Jam
Atheist Answer:

Religious people view us this way because they've grown up being told that their gods are the source of all goodness and that not following their rules is flat out evil. I think we can change this perception by simply proving it wrong.

Be an atheist in public and a good person too. This forces people who think such things as, "Atheists are free to do any evil, selfish thing they want to!" to think such eye-opening things as, "Why aren't these atheists doing any evil, selfish thing they want to?"
